What to Expect from Ryder Cup 2014

Aside from the FIFA World Cup, there is another major sporting event that is sure to make waves when it kicks off next year.

The Ryder Cup, for those uninitiated in the world of golf, is one of the sport's major tournaments that is held every two years. It pits off some of the best golfers from the United States and Europe against each other. There will be two teams, each with nine players pre-qualified based on their past tournament performances, and another 3 players to be chosen by the captain. There is no prize money involved here, only a trophy- participants will be playing all in the name of glory.

Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland will be the venue for Ryder Cup 2014. Though the tournament is still one year away (26-28 September 2014), the increasing number of people who are betting on the Ryder Cup is a sure sign that the hype for it is slowly gaining ground. Fans are now making predictions on which players from what team will shine the most.

So, what can people expect in next year's Ryder Cup?

Plenty of close heavyweight action, probably. Though their their side has been a consistent Ryder Cup champion since 1993 (with only two American wins in between), European team captain Paul McGinley has predicted that the tournament's outcome will be determined only by a small margin.

The Europeans' main man seems to be the indomitable Henrik Stenson, a fact that McGinley himself had confirmed. Among all the other stars who are aiming for qualification in next year's tournament, it is only Stenson who managed to score some impressive tournament wins. Currently, the 37-year-old has been propelled to the World Points list with 136 points due to his winning the Deutsche Bank Championship, Tour Championship, and the FedEx Cup. He is only 36 points away from the score that Martin Kaymer of Germany had when he qualified for the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah. Kaymer, it is to be noted, was Europe's key in winning the last Cup.

In contrast to Stenson's exemplary performance, past Ryder Cup stars Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter, as well as Lee Westwood and Rory Mcllroy (who were both former world number ones) seem to be struggling to make the cut. It is a huge upset that these players have all failed to make it to the 30-man field in the Tour Cup; their chances for qualifying for the Ryder seem to be a little dim at this point.

On the American side, captain Tom Watson is desperate to regain the Cup again from the Europeans. He had been part of the 1993 Ryder Cup team- the same team that managed to beat Europe on its home soil. In an interview, Watson states that he wants his team to turn last year's upset in Medinah into motivation for Gleneagles next year. He has also been looking into making Tiger Woods, whom he once strongly criticized for his questionable behavior, play a leadership role for the team.
